Monitor crashes/hangs - erratic behaviour

Hi @philtao

I am having some erratic behaviour with the Tao Monitor:

  • monitor crashing: unable to connect to it over the web interface
  • monitor hanging: screen unresponsive but able to connect to it over the web interface

On Saturday, I was checking the configuration of the Monitor over the web interface and when I selected a different page the Monitor crashed.
I restarted it and seemed fine, but on Monday, I was checking the VRM portal and I saw that there was no BMS input. When I got to the boat today I found the monitor hanging with a white screen as below:

Monitor on hanging state

I restarted it again and it was fine for about 4 hours, it just crashed again at around 1:30pm, and 5 min after restarting then the screen was black & unresponsive, although I could connect to the monitor over the web interface.

I have extracted the logs, but as you can see below, I can only see the entries for the monitor to be turned on, but nothing on why it is hanging/crashing.

Actions taken:

  • I executed the monitor firmware update, but there was no real update as the existing version was already the latest one
  • I ran the screen calibration

Is there a way to enable enhanced debugging?

Any other parameter/screen I should look at?

Regards
Andres

Hi Andres,

Sorry to hear about the problems you are having.  It sounds like some sort of corruption in the firmware / SD card.

If you can get the screen to work for a short time, can you check the debug exception log: Menu -> Maintenance -> Debug -> Exceptions.  Send me a picture of the screen if some errors are displayed (better by email so that we go faster in our exchange)

If you cannot do that let me know and tomorrow we can talk on WhatApp to debug.

Philippe

Hi @philtao

OK, I had to reset the Exception log earlier today, as there were 1000's of errors from previous dates dating back and I could not physically scroll all the way down to today's entries.

As soon as I have new entries in the log I will share with you

Regards

Andres

Andres, can you also confirm the Monitor firmware version (Menu -> About)

The conversation was taken off-line... here is the outcome:

The exceptions log on the Monitor showed that there was a CAN bus error: canbus/send_msg:259 - Failed to transmit: [Errno 105] No buffer space available

The Victron Cerbo GX lost power (due to a blown main battery fuse) and therefore the CAN messages sent by the BMS kept accumulating until the send buffer was full - creating that exception message

From Monitor firmware version 2.02.04 the Monitor resets the CAN communication buffers when they are full (the exception still happen but it does not disturb the operation of the Monitor)

Solution:

  • update Monitor firmware
  • power the Victron Cerbo GX from a different circuit that is taken straight from the battery (with proper fuse) - like that if the main fuse is bown, the Victron Cerbo GX does not lose power
